Gone are the days when language learning was restricted to a textbook and the four walls of a classroom.

In the age of social media, language apps, tutoring sites and more, the options for acquiring a second tongue are endless.

But perhaps making the biggest waves in recent months is AI-powered ChatGPT.

Whether it’s persuading tech columnists to leave their wives or helping job candidates ace their interviews, this advanced text generator has been hitting the headlines almost daily.

So I decided it’s time to go straight to the source of all this controversy and chat with ChatGPT itself.

I had one simple question: how can I use ChatGPT to learn a language?

First and foremost, it’s important to know what ChatGPT actually is.

ChatGPT, powered by advanced deep learning and neural network technologies, is an AI language model developed by OpenAI

It has the remarkable – if not a little unnerving – ability to generate human-like responses, potentially making it an invaluable tool for language learning.

According to ChatGPT…

“ChatGPT offers a unique advantage by providing learners with access to authentic and colloquial language. Through interactive conversations, learners can immerse themselves in real-life language usage, including slang, idiomatic expressions, and cultural nuances.”

Now, I couldn’t let such a bold statement stand without investigating.

Armed with all the British slang I could muster, I got to work. Remarkably, the bot was able to understand “well chuffed” as happy, “mug off” as deceiving someone and “dodgy” as untrustworthy.

As far as English (at least the British Isles variety) is concerned, ChatGPT indeed seems to have reached native-level proficiency.

So, feeling impressed with its ability to learn, I decided it was time to investigate its ability to teach.

As you’ll see, it’s not the most modest of chatbots, but I certainly won’t knock it for its confidence.

Is Chinese (Really) Becoming The Language of the Future?

Language is a wonderful thing. It opens new doors to friends, cultures and food. But what really is the language of the future? We reveal all.

ChatGPT Language Learning || Final Verdict

ChatGPT is certainly making some pretty bold claims in its ability to teach a language.

Whilst the AI system’s English ability is excellent, I’d be a little more skeptical about its potential to become your next language teacher.

As an upper intermediate Chinese language learner, I was able to have a decent back and forth with it in Mandarin in our Taipei office.

However, in the words of our school director, “the corrections make you sound like a really formal old man.“

Not that there’s anything wrong with being a really formal old man, but it would be difficult to tell when ChatGPT is actually using modern slang and colloquialisms in your target language, if it truly is able to use them at all.

We were also able to establish that whilst ChatGPT could understand generic Chinese slang, it seemed to struggle with more Taiwan-specific words, especially those that had origins in Taiwanese.

Equally, our Italian team member tested the bot’s ability to understand regional Italian slang and this proved to be something of a sticking point too.

So, whilst the potential and benefits of using AI are vast, you probably shouldn’t cancel your classes and throw your textbooks away just yet.
